Sunday Lunch

Apart from the new Dial Arch pub I wonder if anyone has any recommendations for Sunday lunch venues suitable for not so quiet families! As winter draws near I love a Sunday roast but hate cooking it and even more the cleaning up of it! We haven't really found anywhere locally that does a good roast. I am sure Dial Arch will as I have eaten there mid week but would like to have some other options as well.

  1. I rarely find child friendly restaurants. This is a gigantic hole in the restaurant industry and it goes far beyond supplying a couple of pencils and a colouring-in sheet.

Without a shadow of a doubt, my favourite family friendly restaurant was Tootsies in Bluewater. Unfortunately, it's now turned into something else, but the child menu was good, the baby change facilities were very good but mainly, the staff were excellent with children and understanding the family needs.

Going back to your query, I've been meaning to try Sunday lunch at The Tudor Barn in Eltham, but don't know how good it is for children. Further afield, Giraffe at The South Bank Centre is good.

  2. There is a Giraffe now in Blackheath as well, it replaced one of the Italian restaurants. We have also been to Tootsies but in Canary Wharf. We tend to eat at the usual kiddy places - Cafe Rouge, Pizza Express and Strada and Bella Rosa the Italian in Eltham is very child friendly but we just seem to be lacking in decent Sunday lunch places....I've not been to Tudor Barn or even around that area. Is there anywhere to park down there? Really I could do with somewhere on a bus route so we can all have a drink!

  3. Had Sunday lunch with 3 year old at The Bickley in Chislehurst last weekend. Yum - but expensive.
The Deptford Project is pretty good for brunch and they are really chilled.

  4. Forgot to mention Mudchute Kitchen at Mudchute City Farm and Frizzante at Surrey Docks Farm. I've not been to the latter (or the former for a while) but definitely children friendly.

  6. I think it depends on the age of your child. We went to the Tudor Barn last year and they weren't very tot friendly (she was 2 at that time) - they didn't have a child menu, wouldn't do child sized portions, didn't have any child friendly seating and also no baby change facilities.
However, having just checked they've added a Kids menu so maybe things have changed.

It's a nice venue and the surrounding gardens are great to burn off the calories post meal but it does suffer from lack of parking.

We do like Giraffe so have to try that out.

A few months ago hubby and I went to the Royal Standard in Blackheath for a drink. IT was a nice pub and we saw they do a sunday roast. You could try there though we haven't had their food (their ales were yum though)

  8. Try smolenskys in the strand they do kids afternoons on satuday and sundays providing clowns magic shows for all ages. Its only 10 mins walk from charing cross station. Its a great afternoon and the kids are allowed to run free while the adults enjoy having a nice meal and a glass of wine. Not that cheap but good family entertianment. Nick
